The town "Childress City" was named in 1876 for George C. Childress, who was a key figure in the creation of the Texas Declaration of Independence. The current site of the city was formed out of two towns that preceded it - Childress City and Henry, which were platted 4 miles apart on land previously occupied by a ranch.
When Childress County was organized upon the arrival of the railroad to the area in February of 1887, both towns competed for the title of county seat. But Childress City, having more businesses to its name, won the honors in the first election. That election was later declared illegal, however, which gave the railroad's town site agent a chance to act.

He was a landowner in Henry, and suggested that the railroad could not build a depot in Childress City due to rougher terrain. He recommended that all owning land in Childress City be given lots in Henry, and that Henry rename itself to Childress in the process. The compromise was agreed upon, moving all the homes and businesses to the new, rapidly growing site of Childress by the end of 1887.
Average high temperatures in Childress get up to 96 degrees Fahrenheit in July, and average lows reach 27 degrees in January. The monthly precipitation average is 1.85 inches. Annual snowfall averages 6.4 inches.

Three public schools offer education to local students of all ages from
pre-school up through the end of high school. Higher education is provided by numerous institutions within 2 hours of town, such as Midwestern State University, West Texas A&M University, Cameron University, Texas Tech University, Amarillo College and Southwestern Oklahoma State University.
Childress Regional Medical Center serves the area's health care needs. There are also 8 general practitioner doctors in town.
The area surrounding Childress is a well-known haven for hunters, with an
abundance of white tail deer, mule deer, ducks, turkey, quail and wild hog in the area. Outdoorsmen who prefer the allure of the water can try fishing and camping on Lake Childress, Baylor Creek Lake and Greenbelt Lake, which is particularly known for the plentiful bass that have made it their home.
Fair Park is located in town, and contains a small lake and fountain, picnic facilities, walking trails, playground equipment and a swimming pool. It also offers a historical marker for the Goodnight Trail,
a westward extension of the famous Goodnight-Loving Trail over which cattle were driven to market during the late 1800s.
Like many smaller Texas communities, Childress is host to an annual Old Settlers' Reunion. Initiated soon after the town was established, the reunion happens every July, and features a nightly rodeo. Childress is also the home of the Greenbelt Bowl American football classic, a
contest between selected all-stars from the tri-state region of Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico.
